Build a better starting setup

A repeatable way to compare equipment, abilities, and companions using the items you already own.

Quick answer

Give the setup one job, change one variable, and compare it in the same encounter. Keep changes that improve the result you actually care about. This is an editorial testing method, not a proven best-in-slot build.

Step 1 — Name the problem

Write one sentence about what is stopping progress. Be specific enough that a change can answer it.

  • “I die before the encounter ends.”
  • “I survive, but the clear takes too long.”
  • “My setup works only when I watch it constantly.”

Do not start by copying a gear list. Start with the problem that the gear is supposed to solve.

Step 2 — Read the actual dependencies

Inspect your abilities and candidate item effects in the game. If an effect mentions a condition, resource or trigger, check that your setup can satisfy it. A large bonus that rarely activates may be less useful than a smaller one that applies reliably.

This guide does not supply universal attribute weights. Those would require verified formulas and controlled class-specific comparisons that we have not established.

Step 3 — Record a baseline

Record Your note
Class and game version The hero and patch being tested
Encounter A repeatable place to compare results
Goal Survival, clear speed, or lower attention
Current equipment and companion Enough detail to restore the setup
Result What happened, including any failures

Repeat the baseline if the outcome varies noticeably. One unusually good attempt is weak evidence.

Step 4 — Change one thing

Compare an equipment swap, an ability choice, or a companion change on its own. Keep the encounter and other conditions as similar as possible. Retest before selling your previous equipment.

If you survive more consistently but progress more slowly, decide which result matters for the goal you wrote down. A trade-off is useful information, even when it is not a clear upgrade.

Step 5 — Save the working setup

Keep a short record of the version, dependencies and result. Revisit it after balance changes rather than assuming it is permanent. Read the relevant class notes before copying older examples.

For an equipment-focused checklist, continue to gear and upgrades. For tougher content, use Boss and Mythic preparation.
